BMW S55 Exhaust Camshaft Alignment
A common issue on the BMW S55 engine is the exhaust camshaft moving out of its correct alignment, which can cause timing correlation faults, rough running, drivetrain warnings and an engine management light.
This issue can often be most noticeable when the engine is cold, where an abnormal tapping or rattling noise may be heard from the engine. In some cases, the noise can reduce or disappear as the engine reaches operating temperature.
At Pinnacle Tuning we offer a dedicated S55 exhaust camshaft alignment service, correctly checking and resetting the exhaust camshaft timing using the appropriate BMW locking and timing equipment.
The service includes:
Full vehicle diagnostic scan
Check of relevant camshaft and timing correlation faults
Inspection of the exhaust camshaft timing position
Engine locked using the correct S55 timing equipment
Exhaust camshaft correctly realigned to BMW specification
Timing components inspected while accessible
Fault codes and relevant adaptations reset
Engine operation checked following repair
Final diagnostic scan
Common symptoms include:
Tapping or rattling noise when the engine is cold
Noise that reduces as the engine warms up
Rough or uneven running
Drivetrain malfunction warning
Engine management light
Exhaust camshaft timing faults
Camshaft/crankshaft correlation faults
Reduced engine performance
Faults returning shortly after being cleared
This issue can often be resolved by correctly realigning the exhaust camshaft rather than replacing unnecessary components.
If we discover excessive wear or another timing-related issue during the repair, we can also replace timing chains, guides, tensioners or install an uprated crank hub solution at the same time if required.
Suitable for S55-powered BMW models including the F80 M3, F82/F83 M4 and F87 M2 Competition.
