S55 CRANK HUB SOLUTION – INSANE PERFORMANCE 2-PIN ONE-PIECE HUB
The BMW S55 is an extremely capable engine found in the F80 M3, F82/F83 M4 and F87 M2 Competition, but one of its well-known weak points is the factory crank hub arrangement.
From factory, the timing drive uses a multi-piece crank hub assembly which relies heavily on clamping force and friction between the components. If the crank hub slips, the camshaft timing can move out of synchronisation with the crankshaft, potentially causing anything from poor running and timing faults through to internal engine damage. 
For customers looking to address this weak point, Pinnacle Tuning now offers the Insane Performance 2-Pin one-piece crank hub upgrade, supplied and installed in-house.
THE SOLUTION
We use the Insane Performance 2-Pin Crank Hub, replacing the original multi-piece hub with a one-piece design which is mechanically pinned to the crankshaft.
During installation, the crankshaft is precisely drilled to accept two locating pins, creating a positive mechanical connection between the crankshaft and upgraded hub rather than relying solely on friction.
Insane Performance offer their one-piece hub in both 2-pin and 4-pin configurations and state that the 2-pin version has been used successfully on vehicles producing in excess of 1,000whp. 
INSTALLATION
Crank hub replacement is a substantial job and requires the engine to be stripped down sufficiently to access the complete timing drive and crankshaft hub assembly. 
The engine is correctly locked and timed before the original hub is removed. The crankshaft is then drilled using the dedicated Insane Performance tooling before the new pinned hub is installed.
Once fitted, the S55 timing is set and checked before the engine is fully reassembled, filled with fresh oil and thoroughly tested.

TIMING CHAIN REPLACEMENT
